In our experience, one of the most popular types of costumes when it comes to dressing up for Halloween is the devil outfit. Given our very long history and relationship with the devil, in all its various forms throughout history, this is perhaps not surprising.

The figure of the devil, also known as Beelzebub and Lucifer, has been with us since the dawn of mankind, and it is interesting to note that completely unrelated cultures have had their own symbolic form of the devil, despite that no cross-connections exist between them, geographically or culturally. In Jung’s own words, it seems that the devil is an intrinsic part of our collective human unconscious, and an embodiment of man’s capacity to do evil.

By embodying evil in this form, in many ways we “disprove” the power of evil in some way. It certainly helps people humanize and visualize evil in a form they can understand. The principle goes something like this: give something an understandable and recognizable form and you take away the power to scare you. Of course, this doesn’t mean that people aren’t still afraid of the devil!

When it comes to dressing up for Halloween, there are a whole host of devilish fancy dress costumes to choose from. Of course there are the more ‘traditional’ types of devil costumes, complete with red pants, red top and of course the obligatory horns, tails and pitchfork. These are still incredibly popular. However, most customers who buy this traditional type of costume tend to “customize” them these days.

This means applying copious amounts of bright red make-up on the face to ensure that “angry” devilish look. These customers almost always add a pair of cosmetic red lenses as well, and this one little detail turns a scary costume into something totally horrifying. Trust me, these red lenses look amazing!

As I mentioned, there are now alternatives to the traditional devil costume available. The most popular alternative devil costume is designed for women, and it is essentially the “sexy devil” outfit. These are generally deep red in color, have short revealing skirts and also have a long devilish ‘tail’ and of course a pair of deep red horns that can be worn on the head. In general, customers who choose this style of costume tend not to paint their faces red or wear red lenses, as the main purpose behind the outfit is to look sexy and ‘naughty’.

We have also seen many clients who go to Halloween parties as a couple and decide to go as a ‘devil couple’. This is a great idea and we have had reports from many customers that it has been very well received by their friends. Indeed, can you imagine what kind of reception you would get if you walked in dressed and Mr. and Mrs. Lucifer at that party!? If you decide to go this route, we recommend that you both practice your very best ‘devil’s laughter’ so you can scream it out when you first arrive at the Halloween party.

Whatever kind of devil costume you decide to wear for Halloween, I would definitely recommend that you customize and personalize it. This can be in a very simple form, adding one or two accessories. You can also go to extremes and change the design of the costume itself – add some extra color or detail, or make it a little shorter. You can really improve the look of your halloween costumes by applying some face paint, and there are so many different designs available, from the relatively simple to the very complex. You should be able to find these online for free by doing a simple search on your favorite search engine.

I hope this article has been helpful to you, and I hope you have fun dressing up as a devil this Halloween. Sometimes it’s nice to be a little bad!
